What Are Joint Injections?
Injury to your joints can cause radiating pain throughout your lower back, legs, buttocks, groin, knees, hips, and shoulders. However, joint injections are minimally invasive procedures designed to help alleviate your pain, restore your mobility, and improve your quality of life.
At Hudson Valley Spine and Pain, we offer highly-effective joint injections for patients whose joint pain doesn’t subside in a reasonable amount of time with physical therapy and/or OTC medication. Continue reading to learn more about joint injections offered at Hudson Valley Spine and Pain.
How Do Joint Injections Work?
A joint injection is a minimally-invasive procedure designed to provide pain relief stemming from joint conditions. A joint injection typically contains a steroid and an anesthetic. Similar to what you’d receive from your dentist, the local anesthetic is designed to provide fast relief.
While the local anesthetic provides pain relief, the steroid works to suppress inflammation and decrease swelling. By working in tandem, our joint injections are designed to provide immediate relief and long-term results. Joint injections can be made in the following areas:
- Hip joint
- Sacroiliac joint and coccyx
- Facet joints of the spine
- Ankle, knee, and foot
- Hand, elbow, and shoulder
The pain relief from a joint injection can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months — or even longer. It will depend on your condition as well as the type of steroid used in the joint injection.
Will Joint Injections Cure the Underlying Condition?
It’s important to understand joint injections will not cure the underlying condition causing the pain. It can however ease some of your painful symptoms and help with the inflammation.
In most instances, we utilize joint injections in conjunction with physiotherapy treatment, such as the Thyme Retreat, to help improve your holistic health. You may be eligible to have joint injections every three months — if you need them.
